Powerful story about mama doe, Priscilla. Animals are still very much connected to Nature (it was never a question for them) and so they act on instinct, that most primal of connections. We've lost a lot of ours. We still live within Nature, but have convinced ourselves we are separate and, even worse, superior. Not a good thing.

Why is it that the native civilizations we read about have lasted so many thousands of years, when our little geopolitical experiment is already coming apart at the seams a little over 200 years later?

Thanks, Birgitte! You're right, Indigenous cultures have thousands of years of experience relating with the Earth family. If Western culture doesn't last, it's for exactly the reason you point to--thinking we're outside nature. But our attitudes have been thousands of years in the making too.
